Reformer Pilates is everywhere in KL right now: on your feed, in your group chat and in every new mall. If you’ve been curious but nervous about the machine that looks like a medieval rack, this guide is for you.
Here’s what actually happens in your first class, what to bring, and the beginner-friendly studios to try.
What is reformer Pilates?
A reformer is a sliding carriage on a frame, with springs that add resistance, straps for your hands or feet, and a foot bar. You push and pull against the springs, lying down, kneeling or standing.
It’s low impact, so it’s easy on your joints, but don’t let that fool you. Small, controlled movements with springs work your core, glutes and legs harder than they look. Many runners and HYROX athletes use it alongside their training for core strength and mobility.
What happens in your first class
- Arrive 10–15 minutes early. You’ll fill in a short form about injuries and your fitness.
- Shoes off, grip socks on. Most studios require them.
- The instructor shows you the machine: how to change the springs, how to get on and off safely, and where to put your feet.
- A full-body sequence: footwork, leg work, arms with the straps, core, then a stretch.
- Expect to shake. Wobbly legs in your first class are normal.
What to wear and bring
- Fitted leggings or shorts and a fitted top. Loose clothes can catch in the springs and ride up when you’re upside down.
- Grip socks. Most studios require them. You can usually buy a pair at the front desk, but they’re cheaper online.
- A water bottle and small towel.
- No jewellery that could scratch the equipment or catch on the straps.
