For most Malaysians, getting to Bangkok means a 2-hour flight. The real decisions are which airport, when to book, and what to sort out before you land. And if you have time, there’s a classic overland route by train.
Option 1: Fly (what almost everyone does)
| Budget airlines (e.g. AirAsia) | Full-service (e.g. Malaysia Airlines) | |
|---|---|---|
| Usual Bangkok airport | Don Mueang (DMK) | Suvarnabhumi (BKK) |
| Checked bag | Usually paid add-on | Usually included |
| Meals | Paid | Included |
| Best for | Light packers, flexible dates | Families, shoppers with big bags |
How to pay less:
- Compare the total, not the headline fare. Add a checked bag both ways: Bangkok shopping means you’ll need it on the way home.
- Add baggage online before the flight. Adding it at the airport counter costs much more.
- Avoid peak dates if you can: Malaysian school holidays, long weekends, Songkran and New Year.
- Fly mid-week. Tuesday and Wednesday departures are often cheaper than Friday.
Option 2: The train (for the journey, not the savings)
It’s a two-day adventure, not a shortcut:
- KTM ETS from KL Sentral to Padang Besar: about 6 hours.
- Immigration at Padang Besar station: both Malaysian and Thai checks are inside the station.
- Thai overnight sleeper train to Bangkok: departs Padang Besar in the late afternoon (around 17:00 Thai time), arrives at Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal around 09:00 the next morning. A sleeper berth costs roughly 850–920 baht.
Lower berths sell out first in busy periods. Book ahead, and check current timetables with KTMB and the State Railway of Thailand (timetable source).
Who should do it: travellers with time who want the experience. You can also break the trip with a night in Hatyai.
