Bangkok has two airports, and Malaysians land at both. Before anything else, check your booking:

  • DMK = Don Mueang: AirAsia and most budget flights from KL, Penang and JB.
  • BKK = Suvarnabhumi: Malaysia Airlines and most full-service airlines.

Here’s the fastest, cheapest and least stressful way from each one to your hotel.

Airport Rail Link: go down to the basement level (B) of the terminal. Trains run roughly from early morning to midnight, every 10–15 minutes. Change at Makkasan for the MRT (Phetchaburi station) or at Phaya Thai for the BTS. You can tap a contactless Visa or Mastercard at the gate instead of buying a token.

Taxi: use the official taxi queue on Level 1. Insist on the meter. Don’t accept a fixed “flat price” from anyone who approaches you inside the terminal.

Don Mueang (DMK) to the city

OptionCost (approx.)TimeBest for
SRT Red Line + MRT~33 baht to Krung Thep Aphiwat, plus MRT fare40–60 minBudget travellers going to MRT areas

Red Line train: the station is connected to the terminal by a walkway. The Red Line doesn’t reach central areas like Siam or Sukhumvit, so you’ll change to the MRT Blue Line at Krung Thep Aphiwat (Bang Sue).

A driver waits in the arrival hall with your name, the price is fixed, and nobody haggles. It’s the least stressful option after a flight with kids or big bags.

Haven’t booked your hotel yet?

If you’re landing at Don Mueang late at night, a hotel near the BTS Sukhumvit line keeps the ride short. From Suvarnabhumi, hotels near Phaya Thai or Makkasan are one train ride away.

Before you land

  • Data: install a Thailand eSIM at home so Grab works the moment you land.
  • TDAC: submit your free arrival card within 3 days before arrival.
  • Cash: have a few hundred baht for the bus, a taxi or a snack. Airport exchange rates are usually worse than in the city.

Next: plan your days with our 3-day Bangkok itinerary for Malaysians.

Fares change often. Check current prices at the station or in the Grab app.

Frequently asked questions

Which Bangkok airport do flights from Malaysia land at?

It depends on the airline. AirAsia and other budget airlines from Malaysia usually use Don Mueang (DMK), while Malaysia Airlines uses Suvarnabhumi (BKK). Check your booking for the airport code.

What is the cheapest way from Suvarnabhumi to the city?

The Airport Rail Link train. It runs from the airport to Phaya Thai station (connecting to BTS) for about 45 baht, in under 30 minutes. You can tap a contactless bank card at the gate.

How do I get from Don Mueang to the city?

Take the SRT Red Line train to Krung Thep Aphiwat and change to the MRT Blue Line, take the A1 bus to Mo Chit BTS, or use Grab or a taxi. With luggage or a late arrival, Grab or a pre-booked transfer is easiest.

How much is a taxi from Bangkok airport?

Metered taxis charge the meter fare plus a 50 baht airport surcharge and any expressway tolls. Use the official taxi queue and make sure the meter is on.

Should I pre-book an airport transfer?

It's worth it for families, groups with luggage, and late-night arrivals. You get a fixed price and a driver waiting in the arrival hall.
